Channel Nine’s Brooke Boney reveals devastating marriage breakdown: ‘Maybe I wasn’t mature enough’

Former Today Show co-host Brooke Boney has revealed that she is secretly a divorcée.

Appearing on the Inherited podcast this week, Brooke, 37, told host Ruby Hall that she tied the knot around 12 years ago.

‘I got married in my early 20s. I’m a mysterious woman,’ Brooke candidly revealed.’He’s such a beautiful man, gosh he’s so lovely. I was so, so lucky to have him in my life.’

While she did not reveal how long the marriage lasted, or indeed the name of her former husband, Brooke revealed that she and her husband were together from when she was 19, with the couple tying the knot six years later.

She added that one potential reason for the split was their age.’I feel like maybe I wasn’t mature enough or didn’t kind of know how to deal properly with things that come up in relationships,’ she said.

‘Sometimes things don’t go plan and that’s okay. When those things don’t go to plan, it shouldn’t mean that you love yourself less or that you should feel like you’ve failed in any way.’

Brooke also admitted that it was her grandmother who helped her navigate what was a difficult period in her life.

‘I remember having a conversation with my grandmother when we’d made the decision that we were going to break up,’ she said.

‘Obviously everyone in your family is concerned then they’re like “oh no we have to try and save it”.’

Brooke continued: ‘I was like “nan, I can’t see this being forever.”‘ She was like, “it’s okay. I get it. You’re going to be okay.” I felt like she was right – everything was going to be okay.’

While Brooke admitted that she often thinks ‘what if’ when it comes to her ex, she added there were no regrets.

‘Obviously there have been moments since then where I’ve been like, maybe if we were better equipped or if we were older or if we knew what we were doing then we might’ve handled it differently,’ she said. ‘But I wouldn’t say that it’s regret because I think everything that’s ever happened good or bad in relationships since then has always taught me something.

‘I know that’s so hard to hear if you’re going through a breakup, but if you can learn something from it I think you kind of have to be grateful for it.’

It comes after Brooke recently opened up about her decision to walk away from the Today Show after five years and move to the UK.

Brooke revealed she was leaving her role as a Channel Nine news and entertainment presenter one year ago, has revealed why she decided to move abroad and how her fellow presenters reacted to her shock exit.

Speaking to Stellar Magazine, Brooke said that when she was offered the opportunity to study a Master of Public Policy at Oxford University, she questioned whether she was making the right choice.

‘I remember getting the email to say I’d got in and thinking, am I even allowed to go? Are they going to let me do this?’ she admitted.

However, after some thought, the newsreader decided to make the leap to pursue her dream and was backed by all of her co-workers in the process.

Brooke admitted she initially thought ‘everyone would be angry’ at her for leaving but was relieved when they supported her decision.I felt so relieved but also kind of sick. You can’t go back after that. And once I’d said it on TV, that’s it,’ she explained.

Brooke also reflected on telling fellow Today show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, revealing that the pair were sad to hear that she was leaving the broadcasting channel – and jealous that she’d be saying goodbye to early wake ups.

Despite being down about Brooke leaving the program, the TV pair made a lighthearted quip.

‘They were both like, “Oh, you’re going to get off the early mornings, we’re so jealous!”‘

Brooke became teary-eyed as she was given an emotional farewell on the Channel Nine breakfast show, ahead of her moving to England for her studies in August.

The reporter was given flowers from her colleagues as she gave a heartfelt statement live on-air.

‘I’d like to say thank you to the audience for accepting me. I’m grateful to every one of you for tuning in every day,’ Brooke began.

‘It’s a privilege to go over to Oxford, but it is even more of one that I have got this much love around me. It makes it difficult to leave.’
